The floats were fine and the concerts were cool, but for Bash, one part of the parade seemed to stand out from all the others. "I've always liked watching the marching bands come through," Bash said. "As long as I can remember, that was always the best part of the morning." In 2006, Macy's formed a marching band composed of 185 of the most distinguished high school musicians in the country called Macy's Great American Marching Band.

It was a marching band Bash had always admired from afar. Now a junior at Galion High School and, according to band director Jessica Hammond, one of the most talented musicians in the school, Bash saw the band held online tryouts and decided to give it a shot. "I wasn't counting on getting in, but I figured there was no harm in trying out," Bash said. Bash had been playing the snare drum for about six years to that point. He spent a month refining his technique before he created an audition video on YouTube and submitted it to the judges in December.

Bash said he was surprised when he received a letter dated April 24 informing him of his selection to participate as a member of the Macy's Great American Marching Band. It was a different story for those around him. "He was a natural from the beginning," said Hammond, who had instructed Bash at Galion for all six years of his music career. "Not only does he understand the basics as far as rudiments, he understands his strengths and weaknesses as a musician, which is important." Hammond said Bash always challenged himself, ever since he began playing percussion instruments in MORE ONLINE Check out a sample of Jacob Bash's audition piece at BucyrusTelegraphForum.com. fifth grade.

"One day, I'm walking through the house and I'm like, 'I know that Michelle said. "I keep listening to him and he was playing a Def Leppard song. I had played it two to three days earlier, he processed it in his head, walked over (to the piano) and picked out what he processed in his head."
