S. Circle enjoyed a very pleasant surprise Friday evening, on Sallie Harriger, five miles east. of the city, the occasion being Miss Harriger's birthdhy anniversary. The guests of the circle were the Misses Oehm, Mary Brooken, Catherine Elder, of Bacyrus, and Miss Brause, of West Uuion, Iowa, Rev. J.

H. Ouller received a pictorial postal card, yesterday, from Rev. P. A. Heilman, of Baltimore, written in London, England.

The card contained a fine cut of Curiosity Shop," familiar to all readers of Dickens. It also expressed apreciation of the helpfulness of the book, "Europe Through a Woman's Eye," which was written by Mrs. Lucy Y. Culler, published in 1883 shortly after the return of Rev. Culler and wife from a six months tour in Europe.

C. J. Amling, of Phildelphia, who is visiting Wm. Crills, on Spring street, had his wheel stolen, Friday bight. The police were notified and made a thorough search but failed to find it.

Deaths From Lightning, That great organization, the Weather Bureau, has collected important statistiece in the number of deaths by lightning. 312 inhabitants of the United States, on an average, are struck by lightning. Twenty-five hundred were struck during the last nine years. Danger from this element is four times greater in the country than in the city, January is the least dangerous month of the year, and July the most dangerous. 123 persons were killed in July of '98, in this country.

Union Services. The union Sunday evening services which have been so well attended during the month of July will be continued through the month of August. The following program has been arranged by the pastors, subject to any necessary change: August 15, Presbyterian church, Rev. W. B.

H. Culler. Bad Runaway. John Ned'e's horse ran away on West Mansfield street, Friday afternoon, with Mr. Nedle in the buggy.

He was thrown out and sustained some severe bruises, bad his arm sprained and an ugly gash cut on his right cheek. The horse was also somewhat injured and buggy completely" wrecked. The runaway was caused by the bolt which fastens the shafts dropping out allowing them to strike the horses heels. Plankton. John Whitmore, living on the Oceola road, west of town, will start his cider press Thursday, August 8, and run it each Thursday until September when it will be in operation every day until the close of the season. The ladies of the Relief Corps were very pleasantly entertained by Mrs. Amy Mungiven, at her home on West Mansfield street, Thursday evening, Dainty refreshments were served and a thimble given each one as a souvenir of the o- casion. Three girls were arrested on the fair grounds, Thursday, for being drunk and disorderly and put in the cooler. They wept copiouely and after 8 few hours imprisonment were released by depositing 85 each for their appearance, Friday, They failed to appear and the money was forfeited.

Colonel Vollrath issued a general order, Friday, for the 8th Regiment to go into camp at New Philadelphia, August 7. to 12 inclusive. The camp will be called "Camp Kieffer" in honor of the chaplain of the regiment who gave his life in his country's service, An advanced detail will be sent ahead, August 3, to prepare the camp for the coming of the regiment, Tickets good for 12 days on Big 4, Niagara Falls excursion. According to the description of the animal, it must be the great Australian Joobehaw, which was first discovered west of town.

County Olerk, W. B. Forrest, has received a postal card from Dr. I. V.

Wirebaugh, of Prarie Depot, which he prizes very highly. It was written in the cottage at Alloway, Scotland, in which the poet, Robert Burns, was born. The card is illustrated with a beautiful picture of the cottage on the "Bonnie Doone, surrounded by flowers in full bloom. The Chinese are not so backward as regards war materials as has been supposed, Since April, 1895, British firms have shipped to China 71 guns of position, 123 field guns, 297 machine guns; while a German firm has supplied China with 460,000 Mauser rifles and 3,000,000 rounds of ammunition in the same period. The Chinese navy has beep strengthened since the war with Japan; some modern vessels have been added.

Hardy has opened a candy and ice cream parlor in the room formerly occupied by the Sheetz dry goods store.

He comes from Fostoria where he was quite successful in the same business. Thieves broke into Scheib Reinhart's meat market on South Walnut street, Friday night, and stole some. meat. They did not get any money as it had all been taken out of the shop by the proprietors. Company of Galion, will give its first grand military ball in the Armory Tuesday evening, July 30.

The music will be of the best, the program of dances are of an excellent selection and a good time is promised. Rev. J. H. Culler received, Saturday morning, what was to him especially, and will be to the Lutheran church generally, a very sad message, that the Rev.

Samuel O. Kinsinger, of Guntur, India, died July 26, of appendicitis. Rev. Ouller, received Mr. Kinsinger into the church at Burlington, Lows, and started him to Wittenberg college to prepare for the ministry.

He was one of the most consecrated and efficient workers in the India mission field. During Dr. Chesney's absence in Europe his office will be open as usual, with a competent man in charge dax and night, Dr. Robert Reid, of Sulphur Springs, will keep the usual afternoon office hours from 1 to 3 o'clock. A copy of all prescriptions will be left at office and will be refilled by Dr.

Reid. All patients who wish other arrangemente made will telephone or call at office and those in charge will see that they have the best attention possible. Dr. Chesbey will return August 7 or 8. ROAD NOTICE.
