Education By Lou Whitmire Telegraph-Forum Ohio VFW chairman seeking support for Lahm air guard MANSFIELD Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars State Legislative Chairman Larry Moore sought support for Mansfield's 179th Airlift Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard during a recent trip to Washington, D.C. The U.S. Air Force has proposed eliminating more than 800 positions at the 179th Airlift Wing as part of a restructuring initiative.

The possible closing of the base would eliminate more than 800 jobs. Guard members serving at the Mansfield base live in 17 states and in 66 of the state's 88 counties. The annual economic impact of the Mansfield base is estimated at $56 million. Moore was in the nation's capital March 5-7 as part of the VFW National Legislative Committee lobbying for the active duty service members, Guard members and veterans. "During my visit I met with 14 of Ohio's U.S.

representatives, senators their staff members," Moore said. "One of my main goals was to drum up support to convince the Air Force to continue funding the -27J cargo plane and stop the elimination of over 800 members of th Guard from the 179th Airlift Wing. "Whether I spoke personally to one of our legislators or to a staff member the message was clear, all are in support and plan to active as one in the form of the Ohio delegation spearheaded by Senator (Rob) Portman to do whatever it takes to change the Air Force's decision to eliminate the C-27J and 800 guardsman at the 179th." Col. Gary McCue, commander of the 179th, said he was excited Moore was speaking on behalf of the the 179th. "I'm thankful for his support and the VFW's support," McCue.

"We're very proud to have him on our team." The Air Force is attempting to meet the requirements of $1 trillion in defense cuts due to the Budget Control Act of 2011. The 179th is hosting a media event today to explain its side of this issue. "These mandatory cuts cause serious concerns about the ability of our nation" military to adequately defend America," Moore said. "The reduction of 100,000 soldiers and Marines over the next five years as part of required defense cuts means more and more National Guardsmen will be relied upon to pick up the slack for countering national threats on a global stage." Moore said the experience of the 179th pilots, air crews and ground crews vastly exceeds that of their active duty counterparts at half the cost to the Department of Defense. "The Air Force has been dependent on guard and reservist unit to carry out approximately 60 percent of all air lift cargo mission since the beginning of the Iraq War.

So it begs two questions," Moore said. "One, would it really be in the best interest of this nation's security to squander away and disband the cost effective, experienced service-members of the179th? "Two, if the C-27J cargo plane isn't i important and needed, then why are two of the 179th planes and 55 members in Afghanistan at this very moment flying needed men and supplies to the front lines?" 419-521-7223 Man accused of choking goose in Mansfield park Floyd R. With DeWine insisting he'll serve his full term ending in January, Kasich allies recruited a slate of challengers to the 66-member GOP state central committee that they believe will support the chairman's ouster. The executive committee's new lineup, elected March 6, could call a vote on DeWine's future this spring. Both sides say they have the votes to win such a showdown.

In a December television interview, DeWine as much as called Kasich's effort a power grab. "There are folks who are close to the governor agents and allies, and lobbyists and political consultants who are trying to take over the party for the benefit of holding all the levers of power as it relates to politics of the Republican Party," he said. The 29-year-old was put in handcuffs and taken to the Richland County Jail on DeWine's comments. He issued a memo to his caucus questioning a chairman who publicly insulted the governor, and ticked off a series of ways in which DeWine had failed to make the state party's resources available to Republicans running for legislative seats. He said DeWine employed "questionable leadership tactics and poor decision DeWine has since begun tempering his public statements.

But tensions have yet to dissipate. A county GOP chairman in northeast Ohio told The Columbus Dispatch this month that the governor's allies offered him influence over gubernatorial appointments if he didn't run for a central committee position he's held since 2008. Portage County's Andrew Manning sent a notarized affidavit to the FBI, county prosecutors and the state inspector general detailing his claims that friends of Kasich's relentlessly tried to pressure him to leave the race. The governor's spokesman denied involvement. Batchelder has suggesta charge of cruelty to animals, a minor misdemeanor.

Police reports said two men, age 19 and 18, said they were with McDonald when he broke the goose's neck, but had no idea what he planned to do with it. Brett Buerck and Kyle Sisk were fired by thenHouse Speaker Larry Householder after federal investigators began looking into allegations the two aides and Householder laundered campaign contributions. The U.S. Department of Justice declined to prosecute, but the flap put an end to Householder's political career and contributed to a Democratic sweep of statewide offices in 2006. The party has paid nearly $1.7 million to Buerck's direct-mail firm, Majority Strategies Inc. of Ponte Vedra Beach, since 2010.

The campaigns of Secretary of State Jon Husted have also used the firm, records show. DeWine was among members of thenHouse Speaker Husted's leadership team before he become party chairman. I like it a lot, and so does the teacher." Brad Murtiff, vice president and regional executive at First Federal, said the program touches on a little bit of everything. "From checking and savings to showing the students how Uncle Sam gets his piece," Murtiff said. "They will be creating portfolios and they will see how their investments affect their risks. It will show them the opposite side as well. "It is very interactive and to the basics.
