Comer GALION: On October 30, 2014 God called Rita Mae Comer back home after a brave battle with cancer. Those she left behind to cherish her memory are her mother, Lela Hillis of New Port Richey, FL; her two children: Dana L. Comer and James Comer; five grandchildren: and sister, Becky Smith of Twin Peaks, Colorado to rest on the eternal shores. She spent her life caring for the old and sick as a nurse to many. Rita loved her black and white movies and of course Elvis.

She will be loved and missed by all; we love and miss you very much mom. Rita was born May 30, 1958 in Galion to the late Kerman Ginn and Lela (Cook) Hillis. com Schneider Levy Continued from Page 1A momentum we have going for us right now," Sheriff Scott Kent said. His department would lose it, he said, if the five-year, 2.75- mill criminal services levy up for renewal on Tuesday doesn't make i it past the voters. Since it was first enacted in 2009, the levy has been generating $1.4 million a year for the sheriff's office. The original expectation was for a $1.8 million boost, but sagging property values following the recession of 2007-09 brought that number down. "My total budget for this year was $2.3 million.

If we cut $1.4 million out of that, that's not going to leave us a lot to operate on," Kent said, adding his department's budget in PHONE HOURS Circulation: If you have questions about your subscription, call 877-424-0209 Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8-11 a.m. Full Access Subscription Rates: Monday Saturday plus Digital Access Billed at year or just Thursday Saturday plus Digital Access Billed at year or just Digital Access Billed at or just Mail subscriptions are available, call 877-424-0209 for more information. Julie said her family's home caught on fire two years ago and was a total loss. "We just finished rebuilding and made it handicap-accessible for Seth. We got it done just in time," Julie said through tears.

Julie and Thad said they are very proud of 2009. was virtually the same at $2.4 million. "I haven't been trying to use any kind of scare tactics. If this levy doesn't pass, the sheriff's office is still going to be here and we're still going to serve the people," the sheriff said. "However, if it doesn't pass there's going to have to be drastic adjustments.

Cuts will have to be made, layoffs will likely occur and calls for service are going to have to be prioritized by emergency." The drug war may be taking up much of the sheriff office's resources these days, but the demands on local law enforcement can come from many directions, as recent months have shown. "In September we had the four murder cases in Bucyrus. To investigate just one of those cases is overwhelming to an agency. The sheriff's office was able to provide manpower to help investigate two of those murders," Kent said. "Later in September, October we had the 15- year-old who was missing from her home (Rebecca Kemper).

"Seth has a feeding tube and has difficulty walking. He's not very verbal, but will give oneword responses when given choices," Horsley said. Horsley said to know Seth is to love him. His physical education teacher for the past five years, Therese Barron, agrees. "He's a good kid and always knows where everything is.

lose things a lot, but Seth always knows where to find them," Barron said with a smile. These unexpected investigations are expensive, but they are necessary." But it's today's battle against heroin that demands the attention of the sheriff's employees on a daily basis, and Kent likes the effort he's seeing. "We have to take a proactive approach to it. If we don't, it's going to invite that type of person here. The criminals are looking for areas that aren't patrolled heavily so they can set up shop and bring more poison to the area," he said.

Crawford County consists of more than 400 square miles, most of them rural. The sheriff's office has two deputies patrolling the county's roads during the day, three overnight, although with the help of the county prosecutor it's set up a special response team with the Bucyrus and Galion police departments. "We've been through some SWAT training, some high-risk search warrant training, because we never know what's on the other side of that door when we go inside. Unfortunately, we see a lot of guns," Kent said. Also on the proactive side, Kent's office has deputies providing D.A.R.E.

The criminal services levy renewal will cost the owner of a home valued at $51,000 an estimated $45 a year, rising to $129 a year for the owner of a $150,000 home.

"The sheriff has done a fantastic job of keeping his budget in line, and continues to provide services when the state has pushed felony fours and fives back on the county at our expense, when they used to go to the state," Crawford County Commissioner Jenny Vermillion said. The sheriff's office has 21 vehicles with more than 100,000 miles on them. Last year the number of CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) permits spiked by 239 percent, forcing the department to bring on an extra staff member just to handie those. And earlier this year, the department had to upgrade its computers, which were running on the Windows XP operating system, because the U.S. Justice Department required it.

He's the life of the party and we wanted him to enjoy his day," Horsley said. 419-563-9213 grant out there, but they're getting fewer and fewer and harder to qualify for," Kent said.

"And most of those grants are on the road side," county jail administrator Kent Rachel said. "It's very rare that we find a grant for the jail side. I just applied for a grant for radios through Motorola, but that's the first grant that I can ever remember us qualifying for. Our radios were bought in 1998." And yet, last year the sheriff's office was still able to increase warrant. arrests by 31 percent, bringing the jail up to an average daily inmate population of 118.

"When things were tight, we had to kind of limit how many people we had in the jail at one time. We've brought that number back up by getting some of these warrants served," Kent said. And again, it's drugs that are behind the rising numbers. "Of the people being booked into the jail, I would say that 75 to 80 percent of them are drugor alcohol-related bookins," Rachel said. "The general public has no idea what we deal with in here." 419-563-9225 Twitter: Share your loved one's legacy with Ohio State The Lantern is now offering an Obituary section to recognize your loved ones.
