Even though Ward did not think the ceremony was necessary, many of his family and friends were among those who honored Ward.

I wish he could have received this medal years ago when Daddy was alive, said Wards sister, Julia Bland. She added that Ward was the only one of her five brothers to serve in the military. Major General (USARET) David Einsel pinned the bronze star on Ward. At the end of the ceremony, Wards grandson, Brady Bonham, received a good conduct medal as a remembrance of the day. County Commissioner Joe Shock presented Ward with a proclamation for being an outstanding hero for receiving the medaL Shock urged'citizens to recognize how Ward and others went above and beyond the call of duty.

Young reminded everyone that 58,000 names are recorded on the Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C., that sometimes the price for freedom is the cost of lives and that everyone should remember that freedom is not free. Ward doesnt consider himself a hero, but feels the 58,000 soldiers that did not come home alive are the heroes. only Ward and Smeltzer home, but all the veterans home. According to Ward, this award is the welcome home he never received. The only welcome home sign came from his brother, Tbm.

I remember arriving in Oakland, and people throwing rocks at us and calling us baby killers, Ward said. George said all the troops were just average men off the street who answered a call from the United States government. He said they were involved in repair-ing a runway blown up by Marines. This repair work was vital for the shipment of provisions to the soldiers stationed in Vietnam during Lam Son 719. The Advertiser-Tribune article further stated: Although faced with physical danger, Ward continued the vital repairing of the re-supply airstrip even though the airfield was hit by four additional enemy artillery barrages.

Another master sergeant (USAFRET), Mac McAuliffe was extremely instrumental in Wards receiving the medal and the recognition that was so long over due. He said it was a privilege to help Ward receive the award. He thanked county commissioners and the Seneca County Veterans Service Commission for the funding to recognize a hero from over 30 years ago.
